PSP 2000 Slim and Lite

Packing all of the features of the PSP 1000 and more, the PSP 2000 aka Slim and Lite comes in a smaller, sleeker package. Here are some of the improvements made in the PSP 2000:

  • Slimmer, lighter, overall better looking
  • A/V output so you can connect the device to your television for gaming purposes or to watch videos
  • Graphics improvements surpass the popular Nintendo DS
  • Faster loading times
  • USB charging supported
  • Smaller battery with no loss of total battery life

Although from a distance the PSP 2000 doesn't appear to be much different than its predecessor, a closer inspection reveals that significant improvements have been made to enhance not only the aesthetics of the device but the performance as well.

Perhaps the most notable improvement is the system setting called the "UMD Cache" that allows game discs to be loaded much faster than ever before. While the original Sony PSP only featured 32mb of RAM, the PSP 2000 offers double that at 64mb. Just like with a conventional computer, more RAM = more speed.

The Battery

Since the PSP 2000 is considerably slimmer than the previous model, obviously the battery needed to be trimmed down as well to compliment the new size. Instead of the bulkier 1800mAh battery used in the PSP 1000, the newer PSP 2000 uses a flatter 1200mAh battery. Fortunately, since the PSP 2000 uses power so efficiently, its 1200mAh battery actually offers the same play time as the older PSP model (3-6 hours for gaming, 3-5 for video).

The more bulbous 1800mAh PSP 1000 battery will actually fit into the PSP 2000 in a pinch, but you won't be able to properly close the battery cover. The upgraded 2200mAh extended life battery from Sony will also fit into the PSP 2000 but creates the same battery door problem. Luckily, there are extended battery covers available for purchase that can be used to replace the old battery door and accommodate the larger batteries.
